Fields
Fields
Each product that is entered into Open Food Facts has a set of fields. What should be entered in these field is not always clear and ambigious. In order to limit this confusion the best practice is listed here. The principle is that only information available on the labels, bottle and capsule might be used. Use the language selected on the OFF Edit Product page. If you use another language to enter fiels, precede it with a lanuage specifier. Thus on the french edit page we would enter en:Wheat Beer.

Product name
Best Practices
This is the name used on the main label. Often this is the same as the brand, so an extra specification is needed. For instance for 5410228158424 the main name is Hoegaarden, but below is specified it concerns Wit - Blanche;
Have a look at the best practices-page to see detailed information on how to fill in each field.
Common name
There is some confusion what to enter here. The best is to enter the product category found above/in the ingredient list. On the backlabel of 5410228158424, it specifies Wheat Beer.
Enhanced Fields
Quantity
Several fields might be enhanced with information that is not found on the label.
The contents of the bottle, often in cl. Not much confusion.
Packaging
What is entered here is not always clear. It can be the elements of the productpackage and the make of these elements. If both are entered, it should be clear which element goed with which make. Look also at the bottle itself. In order to reduce the confusion we can do:
* Bottle:green glass / Bottle:brown glass / Bottle:transparant glass. and sometimes even more detailed Bottle:brown glass:GL 72 5410228158424;
* Capsule:metal;
* Box:paper
Brands
This is usually found on the main label. One can also add the owner of the brand. For instance for 5410228158424 this would be InBev Belgium;
Categories
Categories
Labels, certifications, awards
The categories found on a label are very limited. They can be enhanced using the Global categories taxonomy.We try to define the rationale behind the categories here.
Many icons can be found the label. It is not always clear what the name for the icon is that one should use. A listing of labels that have been found:

Wikipedia
Links to Breweries on Wikipedia could be entered. To make clear it is external information, this link should be preceded with wikipedia:. Here is an example of how this could work: 5411098110000.<br />

Do not like how this works out. The field should only be used for keyword like attributes. There is not really a place to put url's such as these.--Aleene (talk) 18:59, 5 September 2015 (CEST)

Origin of ingredients
Open Street Map
Manufacturing or processing places
Location of breweries could be specified through an Open Street Map link. The link should then point to the brewery building (the way in OSM terms). To make clear this concerns external / non-OFF / non productlabel information is should be preceded by OSM:. Here is an example of how this could work: 5411098110000 .
This would be the address of the brewery.
Barnivore
EMB code
Beers that are listed in Barnivore as vegan/vegetarian could be labeled as such.
Only enter the EMB-code, such as EMB 29293G for  3760010140017;
Wikidata
Link to product page on the official site of the producer
* https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Property:P2905 (RateBeer brewery ID)
This can be found on the label nowadays, although it does more than often point to the producer site. Just enter it.
* https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Property:P2904 (Beer Advocate brewery ID)
Best before date
* https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Property_proposal/Archive/45#Barnivore_ID (Needs to be reproposed)
Enter this, so any change in labeling and/or packaging can be tracked. If you can not find it on the label, check out the bottle itself.
City, state and country where purchased
Note that this NON-productlabel information. Just enter where you have bought it.
Stores
Add the store name(s) where you bought the product.
Countries where sold =
This is the same as the purchase country? We could add the countries/languages seen on the label.
Ingredients list
This can be found on the label. Sometimes it is hidden in the text, so read everything.
Traces
Allergy ingredients are specified separately as "contains" for instance.
Nutrition Facts Not specified
Leave this unchecked, as the alcohol percentage is a nutrition fact and always found on the label.
Serving size
Usually this is the same as the bottle size (25 or 33cl);
Nutrition Facts
Add the alchol percentage here, the other facts are not often found.

Address markup.
We could add markup to addresses. Add brewery:, street: postalcode:, city: region/province:, city:, country: before each element.
Sixpack and single bottles
Sixpack and single bottles
Often beer is sold in a sixpack (or more). What to do with single bottles that came from such a sixpack. Often(?) these bottles do not have a barcode, but might contain interesting information. So do we add these bottles as products without a barcode?

Categories
Alcohol and Health
The categories taxonomy used for beer is:<br />
On beer bottles various warnings against drinking to much alcohol can be found. There can be logo's or warnings in text.
Beverages<br />
EU
- Alcoholic beverages : Beverages with ingredient alcohol as found on the label<br />
On bottles sold in the EU there is a warning against drinking alcohol and pregnancy.
-- Beers (ingredients branch) : Alcoholic beverages based on hops? malt?<br />
France
--- Amber beers : intermediate colour beers (fr:Bières ambrées)<br />
Sometimes the URL to an explanatory site (2340.fr) is found.
--- Lager : light coloured beer<br />
On alcoholic beverages sold in France one sees the amount of alcohol (Unité Alcohol) a drink represents.
UK
Bottles show the link to drinkaware.co.uk<br />
In addition the number of alchohol units per serving are listed (One unit of alcohol (UK) is defined as 10 millilitres (8 grams) of pure alcohol (wikipedia)). A formula is given to calculate these numbers (The number of UK units of alcohol in a drink can be determined by multiplying the volume of the drink (in millilitres) by its percentage ABV, and dividing by 1000.)

US =
Warning Surgeon General?

Bottle shapes
Would it be possible to register the shapes of a bottle? We could mesure height and maximum width to characterise a bottles shape.

-- Origin (brewery country branch) {not specific to beer}<br />
OFF Limitations
--- Belgian beers : beers with the brewery in Belgium (fr:Bières belges)<br />
The current setup of Open Food Facts has some limitations if you want to markup beer products in extreme detail. As these are extreme details, they are not really relevant to the main purpose of OFF, but you will find them listed on a separate page.
--- French beers : beers with the brewery in France (fr:bières françaises)<br />

-- Artisan Products (process branch) - indicates the scale? of the manufacturing {not specific to beer} )<br />
--- Artisan Beverage Products<br />
---- Artisan Alcoholic Beverage Products (alcool artisanaux)<br />
----- Craft Beer : beers produced on a small scale

Instructions

Best Practices

Have a look at the best practices-page to see detailed information on how to fill in each field.

Enhanced Fields

Several fields might be enhanced with information that is not found on the label.

Categories

The categories found on a label are very limited. They can be enhanced using the Global categories taxonomy.We try to define the rationale behind the categories here.

Current taxonomy

The current categories taxonomy for beer is:

  • Beverages : food that can be drunk
  • Non-Alcoholic beverages
  • Non-alcoholic beers, non-alcoholic beer, Alcohol-free beer - beers with a alcohol percentage <1%
  • Alcoholic beverages - Beverages with ingredient alcohol on the label;
  • Beers : Alcoholic beverages based on fermentation of (malted) grains (wikipedia), implying that a grain should be on the ingredient list;

(beer sub category based on beer colour)

  • Lager : light coloured beer;
  • Amber beers : intermediate colour beers (fr:Bières ambrées)
  • Red beers : not sure about the definition;
  • Stout : very dark coloured beers;

(subcategory based on production place)

  • Belgian beers : beers with the brewery in Belgium (fr:Bières belges)
  • French beers : beers with the brewery in France (fr:bières françaises)

(beer subcategory based on non standard beer ingredients)

  • Beers with fruits : beers where fruits have been added
  • Cherry beer : beers where the fruit cherry has been added
  • Wheat beers - beers based on unmalted wheat in a large proportion (wikipedia);
  • Strong beers : beers with a high alcohol level

(taxonomy branched based on the manufacturing scale)

  • Artisan Products - indicates the scale? of the manufacturing
    • Artisan Beverage Products
      • Artisan Alcoholic Beverage Products (alcool artisanaux);
        • Craft Beer : beers produced on a small scale. Usually this is defined on the label;

Possible categories

Some other categories that are found on labels:

  • Lambic;
  • Bières Irlandaises;
  • Bières de gardes;
  • Organic beers (Bières bio) - beers with a organic related label;
  • Top Fermented beers - as said on the label
  • Flavored beers (Bières aromatisées) -
  • Fruit flavored Beers (Bières aromatisées aux fruits) -
  • Bières trappistes - on the label
  • Tripel - a variety of Belgian beer. Could be viewed as a subcategory of Strong beers.

Wikipedia

Links to Breweries on Wikipedia could be entered. To make clear it is external information, this link should be preceded with wikipedia:. Here is an example of how this could work: (see product 5411098110000 m).

Do not like how this works out. The field should only be used for keyword like attributes. There is not really a place to put url's such as these.--Aleene (talk) 18:59, 5 September 2015 (CEST)

Open Street Map

Location of breweries could be specified through an Open Street Map link. The link should then point to the brewery building (the way in OSM terms). To make clear this concerns external / non-OFF / non productlabel information is should be preceded by OSM:. Here is an example of how this could work: (see product 5411098110000 m) .

Barnivore

Beers that are listed in http://www.barnivore.com/%7CBarnivore as vegan/vegetarian could be labeled as such.

Observations

While entering the beers, we make various observations and conclusions, which are nice to keep; List them in this section.

Nutritional values

The nutritional values are rarely found on beers. Exceptions are:

Alcohol prevention

Some beers in France (2340.fr) and the UK (drinkaware.co.uk) show information to limit alchol consumption. This is expressed in Alcohol units.

Discussion

Non label information

In order to complete a brewery map, information not found on the label must be added. This could be indicated by the prefix added:

Reinheitsgebot

Beers in Germany can only be called beers if the adhere to the Reinheitsgebot, i.e. beer ingredients can only contain water, malt and hops. Thus a product such as Lammsbrau is not labeled as beer, whereas in other countries it is.

I am definitely no professional on the topic (nor a lawyer), but I believe that this no necessarily more true. See the following excerpt from the German Wikipedia:

And the following from the English Wikipedia:

Thus, German breweries continue to comply with the Biergesetz, and often claim compliance with the Reinheitsgebot even when it is patently incorrect (for example, for Wheat beer which were prohibited by the Reinheitsgebot). Thus the Reinheitsgebot has become a valuable marketing tool. Until superseded by a change in EU law, the Reinheitsgebot was also enforced in Greece from the early 19th century due to a law by the first Greek king, Otto (originally a Bavarian prince) that had remained in effect for over a hundred years. The law drew criticism from foreign brewers as a form of protectionism that allowed Germany to prohibit beers from Belgium and England which contained sugars, grains such as Corn and Rice, and clarification and fining agents.

OK, then the question is whether we re-label an alcoholic beverage as beer, when the ingredients are right, but it is not called as such on the productlabel (malt, hops). --Aleene (talk) 19:48, 23 August 2015 (CEST)

Sixpack and single bottles

Often beer is sold in a sixpack (or more). What to do with single bottles that came from such a sixpack. Often(?) these bottles do not have a barcode, but might contain interesting information. So do we add these bottles as products without a barcode?

Alcohol and Health

On beer bottles various warnings against drinking to much alcohol can be found. There can be logo's or warnings in text.

EU

On bottles sold in the EU there is a warning against drinking alcohol and pregnancy.

France

Sometimes the URL to an explanatory site (2340.fr) is found. On alcoholic beverages sold in France one sees the amount of alcohol (Unité Alcohol) a drink represents.

UK

Bottles show the link to drinkaware.co.uk
In addition the number of alchohol units per serving are listed (One unit of alcohol (UK) is defined as 10 millilitres (8 grams) of pure alcohol (wikipedia)). A formula is given to calculate these numbers (The number of UK units of alcohol in a drink can be determined by multiplying the volume of the drink (in millilitres) by its percentage ABV, and dividing by 1000.)

US =

Warning Surgeon General?

Bottle shapes

Would it be possible to register the shapes of a bottle? We could mesure height and maximum width to characterise a bottles shape.

OFF Limitations

The current setup of Open Food Facts has some limitations if you want to markup beer products in extreme detail. As these are extreme details, they are not really relevant to the main purpose of OFF, but you will find them listed on a separate page.

Search Queries

Some search queries that can be done related to beer:

  • Find all "biere" in the world [410 results @ 24/8/15] (query);
