Open Source Day
OSD is a 24-hour hackathon-like event during which aspiring contributors can work with peers as well as mentors to contribute to some actual open source projects. This event is a part of the "Grace Hopper Celebration" and is a virtual pre-event to the celebration. Generally speaking, diversity in the open source community is worse than in tech overall. The goal of this event is to pave the way for the next generation of women contributors and maintainers in the community.
Open Food Facts is a crowdsourced database of food products with ingredients, allergens, nutrition facts and all of information we usually find on product labels but often don't know about. It's not just a bunch of applications to scan and learn about ingredients and nutritional facts but a part of the larger movement to promote transparency in the packaged food industry and reduce the negative impact of food on the environment and humans. The community has been participating in Outreachy for some years, which is longer but has a similar spirit to improve diversity in the open source community. This year, we were accepted as one of the projects in the Create Your Own Adventure category. More Details here

New Contributors
If you are here as a participant to the Open Source Day, you are at the right place! Please go through the set-up guide below and make sure you join our slack channel for this event: #link#
Starter guide
The fastest way to get started is to follow the docker setup guide. If you are facing a lot of issues (you are probably on windows), the Gitpod guide may be super useful. :)
Once you have it all set-up, try exploring the project a bit and adding a product or two. If you have any questions, you can ask in the slack channel. Once you are ready with the set-up, feel free to ask one of the maintainers on Slack to pick one of the issues from {link for issues}.
